1SAM Course DescriptionTeacher in Charge:
Recommended Prior LearningStudents must take our Year 10 Samoan classes or the authority from our HOD.
- Listening, Reading, Writing, Debating and Speaking skills
- Able to communicate and interact in Gagana Samoa with their peers
This course follows Learning Languages in the New Zealand Curriculum up to Level 5 and has an emphasis on communicating in Gagana Samoa. The course prepares you to gain knowledge of Gagana Samoa and Aganu`u (Language and Culture). This course offers 20 credits towards NCEA Level 1. There are two internal standards worth 10 credits and two external standards worth 10 credits.
This course can be endorsed with Merit or Excellence if in a single year you gain 14 or more credits at Merit and/or Excellence within Level 1 Samoan. At least three of these credits must be from externally assessed standards and three from internally assessed standards.
In this course we aim to develop understanding in several key learning areas and skills as follow:
Skills: Listening Reading Presenting Speaking Writing Debating Conversation Research Analysing Specific skills learned Communication In selected linguistic and sociocultural contexts, students will: Understand and produce information and ideas Express and respond to personal needs and interests Use cultural knowledge to communicate appropriately Language Knowledge Students will: Recognise and describe ways in which the Samoan language is organised. . Compare and contrast languages Cultural Knowledge Students will: Recognise and describe ways in which the Samoan culture(s) is (are) organised. Compare and contrast cultural practices. |

Course aims:
This course is aimed at students who wish to gain more knowledge of the Samoan Language and Culture.
The course consists of Achievement Standards from the Level 1 Samoan course.
Course learning outcomes:
- Show understanding of spoken Samoan related to everyday context
- To give an effective spoken presentation in Gagana Samoa that communicates a personal response.
- To interact using effective spoken Gagana Samoa to communicate personal information, ideas and opinions in different situations.
- Use Samoan to communicate information in a Cultural context
This course is an Approved Subject for University Entrance in which you can gain 14 or more UE Credits. This course can be endorsed with Merit or Excellence if in a single year you gain 14 or more credits at Merit and/or Excellence within Level 1 Gagana Samoa. At least three of these credits must be from externally assessed standards.
