Course Description

Recommended Prior Learning

We recommend at least 7 credits in Level 2 Sports Science or Physical Education or Teacher Recommendation or HOD approval                                      

       


    


A highly practical course which will extend students’ knowledge of bio-physical concepts and social-cultural factors studied in Level 2 Sports Science. Students are given the opportunities to understand, develop and implement aspects of skill improvement, training programs and personal fitness and improve their own personal performance. All our standards encourage critical thinking and challenge assumptions relating to health, fitness and sports performance concepts. In this course students will:                  


  • Apply methods and principles of training to improve their own fitness
  • Devise strategies for lifelong well being
  • plan and evaluate a fitness programme using their knowledge of anatomy and
  • biomechanics
  • Analyse a skill performed by themselves and others
  • perform a sporting activity to meet national standards                

           

Trips: At least one trip to a challenging outdoor activity such as white water rafting, mountain biking or similar.

Course Overview

Term 1
In term 1 students will further develop thier knowledge of anatomy, physiology and biophyiscal principles to analyse a skill in basketball. Students will produce a report or presentation using a multi media approach giving high quality feedback on how to improve the skill.

Term 2
In term 2 students continue to build on their knowledge of principles and methods of training and are required to design thier own 6 week training program to improve different aspects of thier own fitness. Throughout this standard students evaluate how they apply a variety of different methods and principles of training, consider thier strengths and weaknesses and justify why they chose to use each one.

Term 3
Throughout term 3 students will be challenged to think about what it means to be a life long physically active participate and to consider some of the barriers for them in the future. Students will consider the current societal trends and influences around physical activity as well as thier own personal influences.
Towards the end of this term students will start our final standard which is looking at our we manage risk in an outdoor challenging activity such as white water rafting or mountain biking. The class will spend a day doing one of these activities before starting this assessment.

Term 4
This term will be used to complete our Outdoor Education standard and finishing off any outstanding assessments.
