What is Health and Physical Education about?

Physical Education develops the cultural, social, emotional, and intellectual capabilities of ākonga, It facilitates a lifelong understanding of our bodies, contributes to our hauora, and allows us to live physically active lives. In Health and Physical Education, the focus is on the well-being of the students themselves, of other people, and of society through learning in health-related and movement contexts.

Why study Health and Physical Education?

Through learning and by accepting challenges in health-related and movement contexts, students reflect on the nature of well-being and how to promote it. As they develop resilience and a sense of personal and social responsibility, they are increasingly able to take responsibility for themselves and contribute to the well-being of those around them, of their communities, of their environments (including natural environments), and of the wider society.

This learning area makes a significant contribution to the well-being of students. 

Physical Education - Students' will develop a deeper understanding of the importance of physical activity and how it contributes to our overall Hauora, understand the challenges that affect movement and gain essential knowldge to live physically active lives. This course also places high value on teaching leadership skills through practical learning. Throughout these courses students will learn how to plan and run a recreational activity.  This course involves both theory and practical lessons. 

Health - The aim of this course is to enhance students’ knowledge of the health curriculum and how they can make decisions best for them in social settings. This is a theoretical course which covers all four dimensions of Hauora such as interpersonal skills, personal well-being and positive sexuality. 

Sports Science - The aim of this course is to introduce students to the key concepts of Sports Science and to gain a deeper understanding of how the body moves, anatomy, biomechanics and physiology. Throughout this course students' will evaluate physical activity experiences, analyse physical performances and learn to give critical feedback and develop and participate in training programmes and consider relevant methods and principle of training. This course involves both theory and practical lessons.
