3 Physical Education

Course Description

This is a highly practical course for students who enjoy Physical Education, maintaining their own health and fitness and being active. The aim of this course is to build on the knowledge and understanding learnt in L2 Physical Education to enhance personal fitness and wellbeing and to develop positive attitudes towards physical activity for life. Students will also learn key Leadership skills through participation in coaching and leading junior classes. This course offers 16 Achievement Standards credits and a total of 21 credits overall.

 In this course students will:

  • Learn how to plan and run a safe physical activity session

  •  Further develop coaching techniques

  • Plan and teach a junior class using leadership strategies

  • Develop and implement a personal fitness plan

  • Consider a range of Leadership strategies




Please Note that this subject does not offer enough credits to be used as one of your 3 University Entrance subjects. 


Course Overview

Term 1
In term 1 students will consider a range of leadership strategies and apply them in various physical activity settings. During the last weeks of the term students will plan and deliver a high quality coaching session to a junior class applying their chosen leadership strategy. Students then need to produce a report evaluating thier coaching, justifying why they chose and used each strategy and outlining thier strengths and weaknesses.

Term 2
During term 2 students will plan a high quality training program for themselves and aimed at improving some fitness components for their own chosen sport. Students need to demonstrate high levels of self motivation to ensure they complete the program and then produce a report or presentation on what strategies they used to ensure they completed their training program.

Term 3
During term 3 students will examine a current trend or issue in the context of sport or physical activity in New Zealand and consider the societal influences of this issue.
Towards the end of this term students will start thier final standard which is a coaching assessment. Using all their gained knowledge around leadership students are expected to plan and deliver a high quality session for a junior class.

Term 4
Term 4 will be used to complete any outstanding assessments

Recommended Prior Learning

We recommend at least 7 credits in Level 2 Sports Science or Physical Education or Teacher Recommendation or HOD approval
