3 Hauora
Course Description

In this course students will:
- analyse a New zealand health issue
- explore holistic health practices
- research strategies to help minimise these issues
- present ideas and findings to peers
- devise strategies to improve Hauora of all individuals
Level 3 Health- is a university approved subject. You have the opportunity to gain 14 reading literacy credits and 5 Both (Writing and reading credits) literacy credits.
Course Overview
Term 1
In Term 1 we will apply a critical perspective to a NZ health issue by explaining the nature of it and the implications for wellbeing, explaining the determinants of health and the influence it has on the issue. Students will then be expected to provide strategies to bring equitable outcomes.
Term 2
In this term, we study an individual topic that requires students to unpack how Western scientific medicine, complementary alternative medicine and traditional medicine affect mental illness. They will need to discuss how each practice treats the illness and its advantages and disadvantages.
Term 3
In this term, we study an individual topic that requires students to choose a contemporary ethical issue. They need to examine the perspectives on the issue with insight into the reasons for these differing perspectives and their ethical foundations and link it all to the underlying health concepts.
Students will also start to prepare for the following external assessment. In this exam, students will be provided a resource in which they would need to analyse the influence that the major determinants of health have on the issue and the hauora of those impacted. Students will need to provide strategies that directly relate to minimizing the impacts of the determinants of health that have influenced the issue.
Term 4
During this term students will continue to prepare for thier external assessments and catch up on any outstanding internal assessments.
Recommended Prior Learning
We recommend that you have 8 credits from Level 2 Hauora or Teacher Recommendation or HOD approval
