2 Physical Education

Course Description

This is a highly practical course for students who enjoy Physical Education, maintaining their own health and fitness and being active. The aim of this course is to develop knowledge and understanding to enhance personal fitness and wellbeing and to develop positive attitudes towards physical activity for life. Students will also learn key Leadership skills through participation in coaching and leading junior classes. This course is a mix of unit and achievement standards.                       

In this course students will:

  • learn how to plan and run a safe physical activity session
  • develop basic coaching techniques
  • plan and teach a junior class using leadership strategies
  • Develop and implement a personal fitness plan
  • develop leadership, communication and teamwork skills
    •                            

Course Overview

Term 1
In term 1 students will look at creating a safe and exciting environment by using self management skills and a sense of self motivation while they participate in a variety of Adventure Based Learning (ABL) activities. These activities help support teamwork, challenge students to use deeper thinking and problem solving skills and encourage cooperation and communication.

Term 2
During term 2 students will learn how to run a safe and appropriate coaching sessions. By introducing key concepts around planning, identifying safety issues, strategies for maximising participation, dealing with behaviour and good communication students will improve thier own leadership skills. This will lead to each student coaching a junior class in an activity of their choosing.

Term 3
In term 3 students will put to use their coaching and leadership knowledge by organising and running a sports event for a cluster of local primary or intermediate schools. This will involve planning, advertising, officating, running the event as well as reflecting on their own performance and looking at how they can get better.

Term 4
During term 4 students will complete any outstanding internal assessments and then focus on their own health and wellbeing by participating in a variety of games and sports

Recommended Prior Learning

This is a practical course and you need to participate in all lessons practical. We recommend 7 credits in 1PED or teacher recommendation or HOD approval.

Contributions and Equipment/Stationery

Students must purchase the Sports Leaders Tee shirt as coaching is a requirement of this course. Approximately $40 (TBC)
