Course Description

  In this course students will:         

  • Investigate adolescent issues that teenagers have in today’s society
  • Understand the reasons for the choices people make that affect their well-being and
  • explore and evaluate options and consequences
  • Plan strategies to respond to challenging situations
  • Analyse how society influences the choices we make
  • To critically evaluate Health issues
  • To discuss with an open mind various health issues
  • To become more aware of the health issues in society


Course Overview

Term 1
In Term 1 we will conduct an individual assessment that requires students to choose a person that has shown resilience in their lives, students are expected to explain in detail the risk and protective factors, and provide health enhancing strategies to improve personal, interpersonal, and societal factors.

Term 2
In Term 2 we will do either an individual or group assessment that requires you to look around your school or community and identify things that you would like to improve. Students are required to set a SMART goal, implement a plan and then write an evaluation as to how it impacted the issue.

Term 3
In Term 3 we will do an individual assessment that requires students to comprehensively demonstrate their understanding of positive sexuality and provide strategies that can enhance the wellbeing of those involved. Students will be given 2 scenarios and 3 music videos which they are expected to unpack and answer the questions that go along with them.

Students will also start to prepare for the following external assessments. Students are expected to analyse an adolescent health issue, they need to explain the influences, consequences for hauora as well as strategies to enhance wellbeing. Their strategies must link back to underlying health concepts such as whare tapa wha, attitudes and values and health promotion models.

Term 4
During this term students will continue to prepare for thier externals.

Recommended Prior Learning

We recommend that you have achieved at least 3 health standards in Level 1 or Teacher Recommendation or HOD approval
