1 Media Studies

Course Description

Teacher in Charge: Mr T. Rahim.

Level 1 Media Studies will provide opportunities for the students to learn about society, culture, people, and the role of the media through a collection of oral, written, practical and visual language. You will have the opportunity to make short films, analyse what makes tiktoks or other content go viral, and gain skills to edit these yourself. Does being in the field and gaining practical skills in filmmaking and editing appeal to you? (picture from paparazzi below)

 

Students will look roles of journalism, media bias, media language, and terminology; Learn film techniques, media analysis, content development, and production while creating awareness around digital and Social Media platforms. Do the stories influencers seek to tell have an impact on our society? (How many of the influencers do you know in the picture below)


Students will also explore, think critically, collaborate, examine information, take part in social actions, and create media content by exploring individual/collective identities and representations through vast forms of Media. This course leads to 2MED and 3MED where you will be able to work on productions and short film creating





Course Overview

Term 1
In term 1 students will be introduced to the course, concepts of media, film language and terminology. Students will also gain knowledge of Digital Citizenship and Social Media awareness.

Students will further conduct a Social Studies inquiry on The impact of global flows and processes on Indigenous people and present their conclusions in the form a script for a vlog or podcast at the start of Term 2.

Term 2
In term 2 students will learn about the diversity in New Zealand through conventions of media coverage and Demonstrate an understanding of perspectives on a contemporary social issue affecting the diverse communities in New Zealand.

Students will present their findings by writing an article or a presentation showing how the issue is represented differently on Media in Term 3.

Term 3
In Term 3 students will be able to learn about social awareness, identify social issues affecting societies and involve in designing a social action to address an issue in the society through the conventions of PSA (Public service announcements).

Students will then Describe a social action undertaken to support or challenge a system by designing and producing a media product (PSA)

Term 4
In Term 4 we will finalise and hand in and showcase your PSA movie.
