Curriculum Area: Design and Visual Communication

Topic:  Catering Accessary.   Eg.  A cake Stand

Students will learn free hand sketching techniques to produce a concept of a product that you will make. 

Students will make a Cake Stand using a selection of Tools, Machinery, Equipment and materials.

Health & Safety Requirements are a must for Workshop Technology.  Workshop Expectations.  

Students introduced to the Brief, the sketching, the Components, Pyrography (Wood Burning) the Costings, the Plans and the Construction, to the Tools, Machinery, Equipment and processes required to make the Cake Stand.



Cake Stand.  Materials:  Pine & Rimu for the Top.  Pine for the Legs.  Screws and nails to secure the components.  Polyurethane for the protective finish.




Course Overview

Semester A
Cake Stand.
A lovely Cake Stand made from Pine and Rimu.
Students will learn about and be constantly aware of the Health & Safety requirements of a Work Shop.
Students will learn about and use all relevant Personal Protective Equipment. (PPE)
Students will learn how to glue Pine/Rimu/Pine top together.
Students will learn how to use a compass and mark a circle.
Students will learn how to safely use the Band Saw and cut the Cake Stand Top.
Students will learn how to safely use the Lathe Disk Sander to tidy us the Top edges
Students will learn how to prepare, cut, assemble and fit the Table legs to the Table Top.
Students will learn how to correctly sand and prepare the project ready to apply two coats of Polyurethane..
Students will complete Safety Worksheets and a project Brief.

Semester B
