Textiles and fashion are SEW cool!
This course explores the fundamental concepts and skills required in fashion design and textiles. Students will develop their technical skills in fabric manipulation, garment construction and design thinking, while also exploring the broader cultural, environmental and historical context of textiles and fashion. Students will work on practical projects and design challenges that help them to understand the creative process involved in fashion design and beyond.
Get amongst the piles of fabric and patterns we have available, learn how to upcycle existing garments or turn them into something completely different - come and be creative.
Entry requirements: Open entry to students who have an interest in designing and making their own garments and accessories.
Term 1
- Introduction to Fashion Course
- Sewing Machine use, care, maintenance and safety
- AS92012 Develop a materials and processing technology outcome for an authentic context - 6 credits
Term 2
- Experiment with different materials and items to create something unique for an authentic context.
- Research on properties and characteristics of different types of fabrics (Names, uses, examples, advantages and disadvantages of the fabric and explain how and why it will suit the fitness for purpose).
- Explore and identify the possible needs and opportunities for the chosen celebration.
- Use stakeholder feedback to make changes to improve the transformation, manipulation, or combinations of materials for your outcome through experimentation.
- Evaluate the final outcome and explain whether it addresses the need or opportunity of the person, whānau, or community.
- Study of commercial Patterns.
- AS92013 Develop a Materials and Processing Technology outcome by transforming, manipulating, or combining different materials - 6 credits
Term 3
- Making the fashion outcome (garment).
- Updating the fashion portfolio with all the evidence (both written and practical work including photographic evidence) for assessment.
- AS92014 Demonstrate understanding of sustainable practices in the development of a Materials and Processing Technology design - 4 credits
- Demonstrate understanding of sustainable practices in the development of a Materials and Processing Technology design.
- Examine sustainable practices in the development of a Materials and Processing Technology design.
- Evaluate sustainable practices in the development of a Materials and Processing Technology design.
- discussion of kaitiakitanga in the context of applying sustainable practices for the environment during the development of a design.
Term 4
- Completing the Fashion Portfolio/Fashion outcome (project) and external report for submission.
- Revision for external exams.
All assessments will be done internally at school. It is a combination of portfolio and practical work.
Level 1 Fashion Focus leads to Level 2 Fashion Focus where students learn to use the industrial sewing machine, design and stitch their garments.
