Course Description

This course is for those students who have come to New Zealand recently and who are developing their skills in spoken and written English. 

The course will be based around interesting and useful topics and students will be given the opportunity to gain English Language credits.  

Standards and levels will be decided through individual programmes and those in Year 11 who are capable of achieving credits at higher levels will be given the opportunity to do so.  

Assessments offered to students who take this course will support the development of NCEA Level 1 Literacy.

Literacy credits will also be offered where appropriate and achievable.  


Course Overview

Term 1
Introducing ourselves, identifying our strengths and looking at our past and future. Assessment is an interview recorded on line. Students will be assessed at appropriate level.

water and road safety (time permitting) Assessment is a reading assessment.

Term 2
Wider reading - an opportunity to read according to interests and keeping a reading log.
Biographies and narratives - reading about famous people and telling our own stories.

Term 3
Writing - looking at career options, applying for a part-time job and writing a CV.

Pathway

This course is to enable students to move into courses in the New Zealand curriculum providing them with academic and subject specific language relevant to different strands of the curriculum. Students who take ESOL in year 11 may be advised to take 2ESOL or an English course.
