Course Description

Teacher in Charge:

Digital Studies is a course (open to anyone, including those who don’t have any experience in Digital Technology) that focuses on a sense of freedom. You will be learning about how to make digital outcomes such as websites, databases, mobile applications or video games, but ultimately you will be choosing to make whichever outcome you’d like to make. It is also a course that focuses on real world issues and finding solutions through developing digital outcomes.                                         

P-TECH (Pathways in Technology) is an exciting opportunity for your son/daughter.  The program is aimed at giving students opportunities to engage with the world of work so that they can successfully navigate their career.  P-TECH (Pathways in Technology) is a high school/early tertiary program focusing on developing digital skills and job-ready students. It is a partnership between business, high school, and tertiary education.  The pathway is five years focusing on NCEA Digital Technologies at high school and an Advanced Diploma in tertiary. P-TECH links student learning to the world of work and entry level roles. As well as technical learning, students also gain opportunities to build work-ready skills, like communication, problem-solving, resilience, self-management and working in teams and with industry mentors. 

Course Overview

Term 1
Introduction to Digital Technology and P-Tech programme.
US32001 - Compose and manage text to produce documents using basic keyboarding and layout skills (3 credits)
AS92004 - Create a computer program (5 credits - internal)
Through a range of learning activities, students learn about:
● input and output
● variables and data types
● conditional statements
● loops
● collections
● modular programming (with functions, methods, etc).

Term 2
AS92005 - Develop a digital technologies outcome (5 credits - internal)
Through a range of learning activities, students learn about:
● Acquiring the skills needed to create the outcome.
● Identifying the purpose, specifications, and user requirements of the outcome.
● Using the tools and techniques of a digital technologies domain to effectively produce a fit-for-purpose outcome.
● Testing the outcome to ensure basic functionality and using information from testing to improve the outcome.
● Working with others to trial the outcome to improve its fitness for purpose.

Term 3
AS92006 - Demonstrate understanding of usability in human-computer interfaces (5 credits - external)
Testing, Trialing and developing the final digital outcome.

Term 4
Completing any resubmissions and assessments.

Pathway

A student choosing Level 1 Digital Technology/Level 1 P-TECH would be considering a career in the IT Industry. They will also be considering continuing with Digital Technology/P-TECH at Level 2 and 3, after which they will be supported to continue in P-TECH and pathway into tertiary with the P-TECH tertiary partners. Paid internships will also be offered for all P-TECH students committing to the 5-year pathway.

All the assessments will be done internally at school using Google classroom.
