1 Geography

Course Description

Geography is the study of people, culture and the environment. 

In Level 1 Geography, we will study topics such as natural hazards like volcanoes (Māngere Mountain/Te Pane o Mataoho) as well as Polyfest and global issues such as COVID-19 and how this spread so fast around the world. 

Auckland is blessed to be home to many volcanoes, are they a risk to us?

The way we use the environment such as farming or housing can impact people around us:


Trips: There might be an overnight trip in 2024 (to be confirmed) if so, it will cost approximately $65.                                      


       


    

Course Overview

Term 1
In Term 1 we will be doing 'Geographic Research' looking at the value of Polyfest and what it brings to Auckland.

Term 2
In Term 2 we study 'Volcanic Formations' around Tāmaki Makaurau. There will be a day trip for this unit. We will also begin our 'Contemporary Issue'. This year we looked at all the new housing projects going up around Māngere College and the impact this has on us as a community. Next years topic may change.

Term 3
In Term 3 we take a look at what is happening globally that has an impact on us here in Aotearoa. This year we looked at COVID-19. We may change this topic for 2023.

Term 4
In Term 4 we study 'Extreme Natural Events'. Lately we have been looking at Tropical Cyclones and the impact they have on our Pacific whānau.

This course is open entry and there is no prerequisite.
