1 Building Construction and Allied Trades

Course Description

Teacher in Charge: Mr B. Aubrey.

This course is designed to introduce students to a pathway that covers a wide range of skills required for a variety of trade related occupations. Students will learn new skills and focus on Health and Safety in the workshop by using a range of different woodworking tools to make a range of different projects.                  

                             

       


    

Course Overview

Term 1
AS 92012 AS 1.1 Develop Materials and Processing Technology outcome for an authentic context. 6 Credits (Storage Container)
You will be assessed by a combination of practical and written and/or oral assessments.
We will be covering the following: Workshop Expectations. Health & Safety. The Brief.
1: Cutting, shaping, forming.
2: Tool machine safety.
3: Test and trial different materials.
3a: Mockup trial of the Rebate and Dovetail Joints. Teacher signs off.
4: Material safety & Data sheets.
5: Develop knowledge of joining different materials
6: Stakeholders needs identified

Term 2
A.S. 92013 v2 1.2 Materials and processing technology 1.2 - Develop a Materials and Processing Technology outcome by transforming, manipulating, or combining different materials.
We will be covering the following: Workshop Expectations. Health & Safety. The Brief.
1: Cutting, shaping, forming.
2: Tool machine safety.
3: Test and trial different materials. eg. Glass, plastic, bone, seashells, aluminium.
3a: Mockup trial of the assembly and or Rebate and Dovetail Joints. Teacher signs off.
4: Material safety & Data sheets.
5: Develop knowledge of joining different materials
6: Stakeholders needs identified

Term 3
Use joints for a BCATS project. Unit 25920 3 CREDITS
You will be assessed by a combination of practical and written and/or oral assessments.
The handbook introduces you to different types of common wood and metal joints used in building, construction, and allied trades projects.
You will need to use at least two joints when you make your project. (A carry tray or similar project)
Your teacher/tutor will also give you a Knowledge Assessment to complete, which your teacher/tutor will mark.

6: Project Finish; sand, poker burn, polyurethane.





Term 4
US 25919 Hardware & Fastenings: 2 Credits. (This unit of work is assessed against the initial Storage Container)
The Storage Unit to house the Internal Tray. (A Tray within a Container) We add Hardware to gain a further two credits. Practice fitting Butt Hinges on a Mock-up Container Lid.

Demonstrate and apply knowledge of safe working practices and use PPE during the construction of a BCATS project. Unit 24352. 2 CREDITS
You will be assessed by a combination of practical and written and/or oral assessments.
The handbook introduces you to knowledge regarding safety while you work on a building/construction site.
To achieve this unit standard, you need to safely complete a BCATS project. (The internal tray and the Storage Container).
Your teacher/tutor will tell you which project(s) to complete.

Recommended Prior Learning

Students should enjoy the 'hand-ons' opportunities that are available to them.

It is recommended that students have taken a hard-materials course such as 10 WOD or 10 DPD
