10 Food Technology

Course Description

Are you the next NZ Masterchef in the making? Or do you aspire to be a chef for the rich and famous? Maybe your dream is to be a celebrity chef like Gordon Ramsey, Jamie Oliver, Nadia Lim or Jax Hamilton.. 

This subject will be the perfect opportunity for you to showcase your culinary skills and talent by developing and experimenting with new recipes. Come along and learn how to make fresh pasta, dishes from around the world and create your own cookie recipes..

You can take this subject for all NCEA levels. Career opportunities include being a food writer, food critic, food product developer, food taster, chef, baker, food photographer...the list goes on...

There are great career and employment opportunities available to those who aspire to great things in the kitchen.

Course Overview

Term 1
BACK TO BASICS: - in this unit we start from the beginning and remind ourselves of the basic skills that we were introduced to in Year 9. We focus on the basic skills needed to survive in the kitchen. These include basic hygiene, measuring, terminology for recipes and safe use and care of equipment.

Term 2
FASTER PASTA: Our main focus this term is on the food ingredient Pasta, and how this simple food is becoming increasingly popular as a staple food for many families. We look at both simple and complex recipes, tasty sauces that are commonly used to serve with Pasta and develop our own recipes to test our new found skills.

Term 3
FABULOUD FOOD TRUCK: During this term we focus our learning on Take Away food and the growing popularity of these foods in our daily diets. We look at how we can develop healthier recipes while we enjoy making our favourites. We look at issues regarding the packaging of our take away foods and also the impact of these foods on our health.

Term 4
THE COOKIE FACTORY: Our last unit is all about the Cookies . We look at how biscuits are made, explore different methods of mixing, research the functions of the different ingredients and their importance in cookie making.

Pathway

Students selecting this subject can continue on a CATERING pathway up to and including level 3. There are many food related career pathways available and the skills that you learn will enhance your opportunities to gain part time work, while you are still at school.

Assessment Information

Indicators of progression... assessment over the 4 units of work cover all aspections of the Technology curriculum
