10 Design and Product Development

Course Description

Teacher in Charge: Mr N. Padavatan.


In this course you will learn to produce projects by following a design process and design thinking. 

You will design  your products using freehand sketching techniques. You will use tools, machinery and equipment to make your personalised project  from wood, metal, plastic and other engineering materials.

These projects will be made in the our well equipped Wood workshop, Engineering workshop and our Multi materials workshop. 

This course will prepare you if you have aspriations to be designers, tradespersons, builders, electricians, welders, mechanics, panel beaters, fabricators and architects. 

Course Overview

Term 1
Curriculum Area: Design and Visual Communication
Topic: Produce a concept of a pendant using sketching techniques.

Students will learn free hand sketching techniques to produce a concept of a product that you will make. Students will use computer programmes such as Sketchup to produce digital sketches as well.
Students will make a pendant using metal casting techniques.

Term 2
Curriculum Area: Building and Construction - Wood
Topic: Clock design - Now is the Time
Students will design and build a clock made of wood and other materials. Students will learn to use specialised tools, machinery and equipment in the workshop.

Term 3
Curriculum Area: Mechanical Engineering - Metal
Topic: Be a tidy kiwi.
Students will design and make a product out of sheet metal using specialised engineering tools and machinery. Student will make a project using engineering skills that could be used to keep their room tidy. Projects that can be made include a dustpan, a mini dust bin, a utility box to keep valuable jewellery.

Term 4
Curriculum: Inventions and Multi materials.
Topic: Products and sustainability
Student will learn about sustainability and recycling of wood, metal and plastic to improve our environment. Student will learn about transport and automotive engineering and the impact on the environment.
Students will design and make an outdoor upcycled garden project using a range of tools and machinery.

Recommended Prior Learning

You must have a willingness to use your creativity to design and build projects.

Contributions and Equipment/Stationery

You will need to buy an A4 visual diary from any stationery shop.

Pathway

Industrial designers design and develop innovative products for use in homes, businesses and industry.
Architecture involves creating, designing and planning products, urban areas, or structures such as buildings or boats, preparing plans, drawings, models or maps

Assessment Information

At the end of each topic will need to complete a workbook and a produce a product which you will be assessed against the Technology curriculum level.
